Dignity of the Worker

The dignity of work has been a key principle of Catholic social teaching from the very beginning. Catholic Social Teaching believes that work is dignified, special and very important. Therefore, workers must always be respected – this includes fair wages and fair working conditions. Jesus himself was a worker. He became “like us in all things, devoted most of the years of his life on earth to manual work at the carpenter’s bench.”

The Church says that the worker is always more important than the work. Work exists for the sake of people, not the other way around. In our work we participate in God’s work of creation. It should give people a sense of self-worth, as they contribute to society, and support themselves and their family. Everyone should have safe working conditions and correct pay.

Saint Joseph the Worker

Saint Joseph was chosen by God to care for Jesus and Mary. A carpenter by trade, he worked hard to provide for his family and is a model of faith, humility, and dedication. He teaches us the dignity of work, the importance of serving others, and the value of putting family first.

As the patron saint of workers, Saint Joseph reminds us that all work has value when carried out with care, integrity, and love. Catholics ask for his guidance in their work and daily lives.

The Church celebrates Saint Joseph on 19 March and Saint Joseph the Worker on 1 May, recognising his example of faithful service and the dignity of every worker.

Prayer to Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph, patron of workers, help us to work with honesty, kindness, and dedication. Guide us to use our gifts to serve others and to always do our best. Bless our school community and inspire us to follow your example of faith, humility, and care. Amen.

What does Dignity of the Worker look like at St Mary's?

Some of our parents spoke to our children about their work and what it means to them.

"Respecting all jobs means valuing the people who do them."

"Our community needs many different jobs to work well."

Our Year 2 children made and presented thank you cards to staff, thanking them for their dedication, kindness and all they do to support our children each day.

We invited the Social Value and Community Manager from the construction company working next to St Mary's, and she spoke to us about how important working is and the value we should place on everyone's work.

"No job is more important than another. Everyone contributes in their own way."
